4 Reasons To Leave Your Window-Mounted Air Conditioner In Place

With fall finally underway, there's a good chance you won't be using your window-mounted air conditioner. So, you're left with the choice of taking it down for the season or leaving it in place. While temporarily removing your window-mounted A/C unit has its advantages, there are plenty of good reasons to leave it up throughout the fall and winter.

1. It's Designed for Permanent Installation

Not every window-mounted air conditioner is designed for quick removal. There are plenty of models on the market—most of them being large units with high levels of cooling capacity—that are meant to be permanently installed. A permanent installation ensures your A/C unit won't accidentally slide out of its window, thanks in large part to the heavy-duty mounting hardware used during the install.

While you can't take down a permanently installed A/C unit, you can keep it under wraps for the winter. A breathable mesh A/C cover can help protect your unit from falling debris without inviting pests or corrosion-causing condensation.

2. It's Too Heavy to Safely Remove

Your window-mounted A/C unit may be removable, but moving it could prove a Herculean task depending on how heavy it is. It's not unusual for a window-mounted air conditioner to weigh as much as a fully grown human being. Removing a large window-mounted A/C unit on your own could invite serious injury or worse, making this task a two-man job, in most cases.

3. You Don't Have Enough Storage Space

Even if you manage to remove your window-mounted air conditioner, you'll still need a safe place to store it throughout the fall and winter months. Storage space can come at a premium if you're living in a small home or apartment. Without an attic or basement to work with, you could be stuck using your already-cramped closet space.

Renting a storage unit is no guarantee that you'll have enough space to store your window-mounted A/C system. Under these circumstances, you're better off leaving your air conditioner in place.

4. Removal Could Leave Behind a Huge Gap

You'll also have to consider the aftermath of removing your window-mounted air conditioner. Some A/C units are so well-integrated into their current spots that a removal could leave behind one or more large gaps. These gaps allow warm air to flow into and out of the wrong places, making it harder to keep your home warm and comfortable throughout the fall and winter seasons.
