Managing Your AC With A Newborn Baby In The House

Many new parents don't know whether to use air conditioners (AC) or not when they bring their newborn babies home. The truth is that newborn babies have sensitive skins and need conditioned air just as much as, if not more than, adults. Just keep these things in mind while using the air conditioner with the baby in the house:

Maintain a Comfortable Temperature

Your newborn baby's body is more sensitive to extreme temperatures than your body. This means you may be able to survive in a house with imprecise temperature settings, but your baby will be negatively affected by it. Therefore, make sure that the AC's thermostat is working well and set it at the correct temperature (68 to 72oF is ideal). Contact a technician if you suspect a mismatch between the temperature set on the thermostat and the in the baby's room. It might be that the thermostat is malfunctioning, for example, due to too much dirt buildup.

Ensure the AC Provides Uniform Cooling

All the rooms the baby may be exposed to should be at the same temperature. This means your AC should be providing uniform cooling in all the rooms. Here are some of the reasons your AC may not be providing uniform cooling:

  • The filter is dirty
  • There is ice over the condenser coils
  • The air registers are blocked

In case your house has non-uniform cooling, keep the baby in the same room (at the right temperature) until a technician can fix the issue.

Cool the House Before Bringing in the Baby

Your body adjusts quickly to temperature changes, but your newborn's body still doesn't have the same capabilities. Therefore, if you have been outside the house for some time and the AC was off, it's advisable to get the AC working and condition the house's air before taking the baby in. This shouldn't be a problem if you have a programmable thermostat that has the correct settings programmed in it or a smart thermostat that you can set remotely.

Don't Place the Baby in a Direct Blast of Cold Air

The blast of air coming from the AC may feel cooler than the temperature of the house. Therefore, don't place the baby where they are exposed to this direct blast. This means you should position the baby's bed so that it isn't directly under an air register.

If you have a newborn in the house, this is not the time to have your AC breaking down every now and again. Have all issues with the AC rectified as soon as possible. Contact a company like Total Comfort Heating & Air Condition for more information and assistance.
