1. Get the Right HVAC System for Your Home Size
You want to purchase the right HVAC system for the size of your home. Don't risk getting a system that is too large or too small and not be able to properly heat or cool your house. In order to get the measurements, either call a specialist or perform them yourself. First, take the square footage of your home and write it down. If you don't know your home's square footage, multiply the length of the house by the width of the house to get a rough estimate. When calculating your square footage, make sure that you ignore parts of your house that you are not going to be heating or cooling. For example, if you have an attached garage that you don't plan to heat, you can ignore its footage in your calculations.
Once you have the number, multiply it by 25. These are the approximate British Thermal Units (BTU) that you are going to need. If you have unusually high ceilings, factor these in by multiplying the number you got from the last calculation by 0.25 and then add that to your total BTU. Take this number to the store and purchase an HVAC system that has this level of output, meaning that it will be able to generate enough heat or cooling power to accommodate the size of your house.
2. Make Sure That the System Fits
Next, make sure that the system that you purchase fits in the space allotted. Measure your old unit to figure out what is going to fit, if you are planning to put it in the same place. Or, measure the square footage of the area in which you plan to install the unit. The boxes that new systems are stored in will have their dimensions listed so that you can easily choose the perfect HVAC system.
